Invasive species

The time when organisms were limited to their native region or continent is past. Ships, planes, trade, construction of new canals for transport have made it possible for species to colonize areas which used to be impossible to reach. Not only can the presence of an exotic species affect individual species of the native fauna and flora, it may change the composition of the ecosystem. Some exotic species are invasive, and thus undesirable. RAVON is mainly focusing on exotic freshwater fish species, such as the Pumpkinseed Sunfish (Lepomis gibbosus) and Topmouth Gudgeon (Pseudorasbora parva), the Italian Crested Newt (Triturus carnifex), as well as on the fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis that causes chytridiomycosis in amphibians.
